July 4, 2007 - Charges are pending against a suspect wounded by a Houston police officer after he attempted to run over the officer with his vehicle at 8901 Bissonnet about 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday (July 3).
The suspect, John F. Burks (b/m, DOB 8/16/89), was treated and released from Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital for gunshot wounds to both wrists. Burks faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance. The officer who discharged his service revolver, M. Domiguez, is a two-year veteran assigned to the Fondren Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J.H. Roberts and Officers T.T. Pool and B.W. Nabors reported:
Uniformed HPD officers working in support of an undercover narcotics investigation at a nearby location were parked in the parking lot of the Stone River Apartments at 8901 Bissonnet when they observed what they believed to be a drug deal. When uniformed officers attempted to arrest the driver (Burks), he accelerated rapidly towards Officer Dominguez, causing the officer to fear for his safety. Officer Dominguez fired several shots at the suspect who then crashed through a brick wall as he swerved around the officer and his unmarked patrol vehicle. Burks was taken into custody without further incident.
As is customary in officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's office.
