HPD “Comida” Food Drive to Help Feed Thousands During the Holidays
November 25, 2007 - At a news conference at 10 a.m. TOMORROW (Monday, Nov. 26), the Houston Police Department will announce the kickoff of HPD’s 22nd Annual “Comida” Food Drive to feed those in need during the holiday season.
The news conference will be held at the Fiesta Mart at 4711 Airline Drive.
The Houston Police Department, Houston Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni Association, Fiesta Mart, and the Pepsi Bottling Group will once again join together to sponsor the annual “Comida” Food Drive.
The “Comida” Food Drive began in December 1985 with Officer Joe Dominguez’s concern for the less fortunate Hispanic citizens of Houston. Dominguez put together what is today one of the largest food drives in the city of Houston. During the first year, approximately 600 families received a box of non-perishable food. Each box donated fed a family of four during the Christmas holidays. The food drive now provides food for more than 3500 families in the city of Houston.
The distribution of the food will be held at a later date to churches that pre-registered to participate in the program. For more information, contact HPD Officer Alvin Steelman, Public Affairs Division, at 713-308-3200.
