Incident at 200 Stratford

September 15, 2007 - Charges are pending against a suspect arrested in the aggravated assault of a police officer in the 200 block of Stratford about 11:55 p.m. on Friday (September 14).

Julie Bracklin Wardell (W/f, DOB: 12-20-83), faces felony charges of aggravated assault of a police officer and evading arrest.

HPD Officer M. A. Peters, sworn in as an officer in November 2006 and assigned to the South Central Patrol Division, was not injured.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. McStravick and Officer T. Andrade reported:

Officers attempted to stop Wardell for speeding and she refused to pull over. After a brief vehicle pursuit, Wardell was able to lose the pursuing officers.

Officers continued to search the area for Wardell’s vehicle and, after a short time, located Wardell in her vehicle. She again fled from officers. It was then that Wardell lost control of her vehicle and struck a metal fence surrounding a residence. Officer Peters got out of his patrol vehicle as Wardell attempted to flee again by putting her vehicle in reverse. Fearing that he was about to be run over by the suspect’s vehicle, Officer Peters discharged his service weapon two times. Neither bullet struck Wardell. The suspect attempted to flee once again and struck a police car. Wardell was taken into custody after her several attempts to flee failed.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the incident is under investigation by the HPD Homicide Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s office.
