The victims are identified as Letha “Savannah” Perkins, 51, and her goddaughter, Chasity Taylor, 13. Both females suffered at least one gunshot wound and were pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. E. Elliott and Senior Police Officer A. Mares reported:

At about 2 a.m. on Sunday, December 7, HFD personnel responded to a 9-1-1 call at 7528 Sandra and found both victims deceased inside the residence. Patrol officers were then contacted and arrived at the scene. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots in the area about 11:40 p.m. the night before. The unknown suspects forced their way into the residence and fired several shots.

Further investigation has determined Ms. Perkins resisted the suspects and exchanged gunfire with them. The motive in the shootings is robbery as it appears the suspects targeted the home. Family members stated several items, including jewelry, were missing from the house.
