Suspects Arrested in Shooting at 6969 South Loop East

July 31, 2008 - Charges have been filed against two suspects and charges are pending against a third suspect arrested in the shooting of an elderly woman at 6969 South Loop East about 1:20 p.m. on July 21.

Raziel Jesus Muñoz (H/m, DOB: 4-11-86) and Bruno Aviles (H/m, DOB: 8-20-90) are each charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Muñoz is charged in the 182nd State District Court while Aviles is charged in the 185th State District Court. The third suspect, Andrew Garcia (H/m, DOB: 11-29-87) faces charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. All three suspects are accused in the shooting of Velia Ortega, 78, of Houston. Ms. Ortega suffered at least one gunshot wound and is reported in satisfactory at Ben Taub General Hospital.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant G. Gonzales and Officer J. Sosa reported:

Ms. Ortega was visiting family members at the Plum Creek apartments at 6969 South Loop East when suspects drove by looking for the family members. The suspects had a dispute with Ms. Ortega’s family regarding a vehicle. The suspects fired several shots into the apartment and hit Ms. Ortega as she was inside watching television.

Further investigation identified Muñoz, Aviles and Garcia as the suspects in this case. Muñoz was arrested last Tuesday (July 22) and Aviles was arrested last Thursday (July 24). Garcia was arrested today (July 31) in the 10900 block of the Gulf Freeway without incident.
