National Night Out Now in October For Texas

June 20, 2008 - The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) recently announced that for the first time in its twenty-five year history an alternate test date for National Night Out 2008 has been instituted for the State of Texas. This change in date will enable law enforcement agencies and communities to officially participate in National Night Out during a cooler time of the year while remaining a part of the NATW team.

The new date for the Houston/Harris County National Night Out campaign is Tuesday, October 7, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. In addition, this year’s event will be a special 25th Anniversary. The Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and surrounding law enforcement agencies will once again sponsor this valuable police-community partnership.

National Night Out is a premier, crime prevention event that enables citizens and citizen groups to band together in a unified fight against crime and drugs. The Houston/Harris County National Night Out effort has consistently shown its strength, placing amongst the top cities from across the nation in participation. Last year, sixteen law enforcement agencies participated in the Houston/Harris County National Night Out campaign and interacted with over 60,000 citizens during various events (block parties, parades, and activities). Over 640 National Night Out events were identified throughout the Houston/Harris County area. This positive response from the citizens resulted in a 4th place National Night Out Award for cities with a +300,000 population.

The Houston Police Department is encouraging all citizens to take advantage of this new date and enjoy some pleasant weather while getting out, leaving your lights on, and meeting your neighbor. Our strength is in our unity. Our strength sends a clear message to the criminals that we will not tolerate crime in our neighborhood, community, and city.
