HPD Steps Up Recruiting Efforts Via the Airwaves

March 06, 2008 - The Houston Police Department is taking our message to recruit the best police officers in the nation to the airwaves, asking young men and women to “Stand Up” and be counted to serve and protect our community.

The HPD contracted with a company to produce five 30 second TV/video advertisements featuring Houston police officers on their everyday jobs. Video clips of the first two completed spots can be viewed at 1 and 2. Three other video ads are in the final stages of editing and will be released soon.

“One of our ads began airing last weekend and we have already noticed an increase in calls to our Recruiting Unit,” said Assistant Chief G.T. Buenik of the Professional Development Command. “We are hopeful that young people in and outside our community see how exciting this career can be with assignments from Mounted Patrol to Helicopters to S.W.A.T. to Homicide,” Chief Buenik said. “Our CRU (Crime Reduction Unit), CSU (Crime Scene Unit) and other divisions present endless opportunities and career paths for our recruits,” he added.

There has never been a better time to join the HPD. Just recently, Houston City Council approved a Cadet Recruiting Hiring Incentive Program allowing cadets enrolled in the next four classes to receive monetary incentives. A $12,000 incentive will be effective for the March and May cadet classes, while an $8,000 incentive will apply to the June and August classes.

If you or someone you know is interested in making a difference and serving and protecting the lives of more than two million people in our city, we invite you to contact the Houston Police Department in any of three separate ways: call the Recruiting Unit at 713-308-1300, go to our Web site at www.houstonpolice.org and click Careers, or visit www.hpdcareer.com .
