Charges Filed in September 2007 Murder Case

September 02, 2008 - Charges have been filed against three suspects arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 6310 Rampart about 12:50 a.m. on September 28, 2007.
The suspects, Darrell A. Jones (b/m, DOB: 10-7-86), Derrick Portis (b/m, DOB: 9-23-89) and John Alfred Johnson Jr. (b/m, DOB: 2-16-75) are charged with murder in the 180th State District Court. Jones and Portis are currently in custody in the Harris County Jail on an unrelated murder. Johnson is in custody in the Texas Department of Corrections on an unrelated theft charge. All three are accused in the killing of Corey Tate, 20, of Louisiana and a Katrina evacuee. Tate suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD Homicide Division Officers A. J. Palos and C. T. Hufstedler reported:
Officers responded to a shooting call at the Rampart Garden Apartments and found Tate shot on a second story walkway. Witnesses reported seeing two black males and a white female running from the location after the shooting.
A follow –up investigation determined Tate, who was an acquaintance of the suspects, was shot in an argument over stolen property. Further investigation identified Jones, Portis and Johnson as the suspects in this case and on Thursday (August 28) all three were charged.
