Investigation Into Suspect's Death a 7300 T.C. Jester Blvd

April 15, 2009 - Houston police are investigating the death of a suspect in the 7300 block of T.C. Jester about 1 a.m. today.

The suspect, Edwin R. Frelix, 50, of Houston, suffered lacerations to his body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer M. P. Enriquez, sworn in as an officer in November 2007 and R. T. Johnson, sworn in in November 2008, are both assigned to the North Patrol Division.  Neither officer was injured in this incident.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant B. Roberts and Senior Police Officer R. Moreno reported:

Officers Enriquez and Johnson responded to a 9-1-1 disturbance call when they saw a male matching the description of the reported suspect, later identified as Frelix.  As the officers attempted to detain Frelix, he fled on foot.  As Officer Johnson pursued Frelix on foot, Officer Enriquez, who was driving the patrol vehicle, tried to block Frelix’s avenue of escape with the patrol vehicle.  Frelix then ran into the path of the patrol vehicle and was struck.

As is customary in in-custody deaths this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide, Internal Affairs and Vehicular Crimes Divisions, as well as the public integrity group of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
