Officer-Involved Shooting at 906 Greens Road

April 20, 2009 - Houston police are investigating an officer-involved shooting incident at 906 Greens Road about 11:55 a.m. on Friday (April 17).

Officer C. Slater, who discharged his duty weapon, is assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in December 1993.  Officer Slater was not injured in this incident.  Officer R. Teweliet, also assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division, was present but did not discharge his weapon.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant L. Flores and Senior Police Officer P. Guerrero reported:

Officers Slater and Teweliet, while off-duty and in plain clothes, were flagged down by the manager of The Woods of Greenbriar, at 906 Greens Road, regarding a disturbance that involved several males standing in the apartment complex parking lot.  The officers approached the men standing next to a white Ford Taurus and began an investigation.  At that time, the officers were approached by a witness who warned there was a suspect with a gun aimed towards them.  Before the witness could fully warn the officers, several gunshots rang out.

Both Officers Slater and Teweliet saw two suspects with weapons across Greens Road at the Citgo Gas Station shooting towards them.  Suspect Gerard Jonathon Barnett ran westbound across the parking lot.  A second, unidentified suspect ran westbound and then cut north along Wayforest.  The officers gave chase on foot.  Officer Slater, fearing for his life and Officer Teweliet’s life, discharged his firearm at Barnett, who was pointing what appeared to be a weapon at them.

Barnett received a gunshot wound to his upper thigh and fell in Greens Road as he crossed Wayforest.  Officers cautiously approached Barnett but did not observe a weapon.  Officer Slater was told by a witness that before officers got to Barnett a black male grabbed the gun and ran northbound on Wayforest.  The second suspect was seen running behind the Citgo Station, northbound on Wayforest.  The second suspect is described only as a black male in his mid 20s wearing a black shirt, black pants and a black baseball cap with red trim.

Barnett was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital where he was treated and released.  At this time it is unknown if Officer Slater or the unidentified second suspect struck Barnett.  Investigators were able to recover two weapons from the white Ford Taurus where officers were originally conducting their investigation.  No charges have been filed against Barnett at this time.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings occurring within the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
