Auto-Pedestrian Fatality at 500 Gilpin

February 5, 2008 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 500 block of Gilpin about 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 4).

The victim, a three-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant N. A. Perry and Officer T. A. Cox reported:

The child exited the passenger side of a white Chevrolet Suburban and walked around the front of the vehicle toward the driver’s side.  As the driver, the child’s mother, attempted to pull her daughter to safety through the open driver’s side door, she fell out of the vehicle.  Both the mother and her daughter were caught underneath the left front tire of the Suburban and the vehicle continued rolling backwards, driverless, until it struck a utility pole.  The child was killed and the mother suffered a leg injury.  The mother was treated and released at the scene.

The investigation is continuing.
