Charges Upgraded Against Suspect Arrested in Fatal Shooting at 4200 Wilmington

June 5, 2009 - Charges have been upgraded against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 4200 Wilmington about 2:30 a.m. on March 10, 2009.

The suspect, Kermit Ladell Johnson (b/m, DOB: 10-30-85), is charged with capital murder in the 182nd State District Court.  Johnson is accused in the killing of Steven Torres, 39, of Houston.  Mr. Torres sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant N.T. Ruland and Senior Police Officer B.W. Nabors reported:

Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots in the parking lot of the Wilmington House Apartments and found Torres’ vehicle had struck a parked car.  Residents then found Torres lying on the ground next to his vehicle. 

Further investigation identified Johnson as the shooter in this case and on May 29, 2009 he was charged with murder.  Johnson remains in custody in the Harris County Jail.
