Fatal Traffic Accident at 3200 North Freeway

March 13, 2009 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 3200 North Freeway (Interstate 45 North) about 8:30 a.m. today (Mar. 13).

The male victim, Calvin Claibourne McManus, 70, of Pasadena, was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Casares and Officer R. Newton reported:

Dr. McManus was driving a 2003 red Lexus sedan northbound in the right lane of the North Freeway when he attempted to pass a 2003 white Ford pickup truck.  McManus’ Lexus hit the pickup truck, lost control, went off the main lanes, bounced off a freeway light fixture, rolled over the service road guardrail and landed on its hood on the service road.

Investigators found pain medication in McManus’ car; indicating speed and drugs may be possible factors in the accident.  The female driver of the pickup truck was not injured and is not believed to be at fault.

The investigation is continuing.
