Suspect Arrested in Fatal Stabbing at 4000 Cavalcade

May 28, 2009 - Charges are pending against a suspect arrested in the fatal stabbing of a man at 4000 Cavalcade about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday (May 27).

Roy Lee Powell (b/m, DOB: 9-1-43) is facing a murder charge in the killing of Burt Lee Hopkins, 33, who suffered a stab wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at LBJ Hospital.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant R.A. Odom and Officer J.L. Coffelt reported:

Powell stole an aluminum window frame from a residence in the 4700 block of Russell.  The homeowner was advised of the theft by neighbors and began looking for the suspect in the neighborhood.  The homeowner met Mr. Hopkins who pointed out Powell walking down Falls Street.  At that time, the homeowner confronted Powell at a bus stop.  As the two began fighting, Powell pulled out a knife.  Mr. Hopkins then grabbed Powell and attempted to break up the fight.  It was then that Powell stabbed Hopkins in the neck.  A friend drove Hopkins to the hospital where he later died.

Powell was taken into custody a short time later without incident.
