February 12, 2010 -

**CORRECTION ON NUMBER OF WOUNDS TO OFFICER**
**ADDED SECOND CHARGE FILED ON SUSPECT**

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the shooting of a Houston police officer at 9757 Pine Lake Drive about 11:55 a.m. on Monday (Feb. 8).

The suspect, Patrick Carnell Freeman (b/m, DOB: 1-10-91), is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and burglary of a habitation in the 263rd State District Court. A juvenile suspect, 14, has been referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities on a charge of burglary of a habitation.

Officer F. L. Pierce, who discharged his duty weapon, suffered one gunshot wound to the abdomen and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he remains in good condition. Officer Pierce, assigned to the South Central Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in June 2006.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant E. Cisneros and Senior Police Officer D. Vasquez reported:

Officer Pierce interrupted the juvenile suspect and Freeman who were burglarizing an apartment at 9757 Pine Lake Drive. As he attempted to take the 14-year-old into custody, Officer Pierce was confronted by Freeman and both men got into a struggle. Freeman then pulled out a pistol he had just stolen and shot Officer Pierce. Officer Pierce, fearing for his life, managed to return fire but did not strike Freeman or the 14-year-old. Both suspects then fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. Freeman and the juvenile were later taken into custody by Jersey Village police officers.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings in the city limits, this case will be investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
