Fatal Traffic Accident at 9000 Eastex Freeway

January 11, 2010 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 9000 Eastex Freeway (U.S. Highway 59 North) about 1:45 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 9).

The name of the deceased female victim, 25, is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant I. Izaguirre and Officer C. Long reported:

A white Chevrolet Silverado was traveling northbound on the Eastex Fwy and ended up striking a concrete barrier. At this time in the investigation, it is unclear if the Silverado struck a gray, four-door Mazda on the freeway or tried to avoid striking the Mazda just prior to hitting the barrier.

The driver of an 18-wheeler struck the Mazda due to the Mazda being disabled on the freeway for an unknown reason. The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead and her female passenger, 29, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with serious injuries. There were no signs of intoxication or excessive speed on the part of the driver of the 18-wheeler.

The driver of the Silverado fled on foot after the vehicle became disabled.

Investigators urge anyone with information in this accident to contact the HPD Hit and Run Detail at 713-247-4065.
