Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 6710 Letcher

January 19, 2010 - A suspect who pointed a shotgun at Houston police officers was fatally shot by an officer at 6710 Letcher about 9:30 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 15).

The identity of the male suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office. He sustained at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who discharged his duty weapon, Officer R. Massey, was not injured. Officer Massey, sworn in as an officer in May 2001, is assigned to the Narcotics Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant W. Bush and Senior Police Officer C. Sturdivant reported:

HPD officers attempted to serve a narcotics search warrant at 6710 Letcher when they entered the house and announced themselves as police officers with a search warrant. Upon entering the house, they were confronted by the suspect who pointed a shotgun at the officers and told them to come and get him. At that time, Officer Massey, fearing for his safety and the safety of the officers with him, discharged his weapon and the suspect returned fire. The suspect was struck at least one time and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers recovered narcotics at the residence.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
