Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Shooting at 5400 Bennington

May 12, 2010 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man at 5400 Bennington about 10:30 p.m. on April 30.

Suspect, Diamond Markee GodfreyThe suspect, Diamond Markee Godfrey (b/m, DOB: 8-29-91), is charged with capital murder in the 338th State District Court. Godfrey was arrested today (May 12) by Louisiana State Police in Ville Platte, Louisiana, and is awaiting extradition back to Texas.

Godfrey is accused in the killing of Robert Butler, Sr., 57, who suffered a gunshot wound to the face and died at Ben Taub General Hospital on May 2.

A second possible suspect, Damion Mann (b/m, DOB: 5-9-91), is wanted as a person of interest in this incident. He is not charged at this time. Mann is 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighs about 180 pounds and has short black hair. A photo of Mann is attached to this news release.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants W. Meeler, C. Howard, Senior Police Officer J. Selvera and Officer E. Castaneda reported:

Mr. Butler was parking a tractor-trailer when he was approached by two unknown black males and then shot in the face.

Further investigation developed Godfrey as the shooter and one of the two suspects in this case.
