Suspect Charged in Incident at 5110 Georgi

June 20, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a suspect in an incident in which a Houston police officer wounded a suspect at 5110 Georgi about 8:20 p.m. Saturday (June 18).

John Michael Porter (w/m, DOB: 10-24-50) is charged with deadly conduct in the 180th State District Court. Porter currently remains in Ben Taub Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening wounds.

Senior Police Officer R. Pedraza and Officer S. Harvey, who discharged their duty weapons, were not injured in this incident. Officer Pedraza was sworn in as an officer in June of 1984. Officer Harvey was sworn in as an officer in September of 2007. Both are assigned to the North Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Burton and Officer M. Burrow reported:

HPD officers from the North Patrol Division responded to a call of a man wielding a weapon at the above address. When they arrived at the scene, they encountered suspect Porter, a resident of the home, discharging a pistol. Officers gave repeated verbal commands for Porter to put down the gun. Porter ignored those commands and then pointed and fired his pistol at the officers. Both Officer Pedraza and Officer Harvey, in fear of their lives and the safety of the officers around them, discharged their duty weapons. Porter was struck at least one time in the upper torso and was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings, this case will be investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
