March 17, 2011 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal traffic accident in the 600 block of the East Loop South (East Interstate Highway 610 South) about 5:50 p.m. on Saturday (March 12).

Moises DeJesus Alvarenga (H/m, DOB: 5-27-82) is charged with two counts of accident involving injury in the 339th State District Court.  A photo of Alvarenga is attached to this news release.

Two victims, a 35-year-old woman, Luz Campos, of Houston, and a 12-year-old boy, David Campos, of Houston, were pronounced dead at the scene.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant S. Wilson and Officer E. Rubio reported:

A tan Chrysler Sebring and a brown Chevrolet Astro van were traveling north on the 610 East Loop on the Ship Channel Bridge when, according to witnesses, the driver of the Sebring made an unsafe lane change and struck the Astro van.  The driver of the Astro van took evasive action and struck the outside concrete wall of the bridge.  Upon impact, the two victims in the van were ejected over the edge of the bridge and landed on the ground below.  Four other persons in the van were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in fair condition.  The driver and a passenger of the Sebring fled on foot.

Further investigation led to the identification of Alvarenga as the driver of the Chrysler Sebring.  Alvarenga has confessed to his role in the accident.  The passenger is not charged in this incident.
