Houston Police Department
Investigation into Aggravated Assault of HPD Officer at 1600 North Wayside

July 23, 2012 - Houston police are investigating the aggravated assault of a Houston police officer at 1600 North Wayside about 3 a.m. on Sunday (July 22).

Officer D. Gil, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in this incident.  Officer Gil was sworn in as an officer in July 2006 and is assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officer J. Robles reported:

Officer Gil was working an approved extra job at  Emiliano's Bar at 7710 East Freeway (East Interstate Highway 10) and asked two Hispanic males to leave the location once it closed.  Later, as Officer Gil walked to his personal vehicle, he noticed the same males waiting for him in the parking lot.  When Officer Gil left the location in his vehicle, the males followed him in a dark-colored, possibly black, sport utility vehicle.  The suspects pulled up beside Officer Gil in an attempt to ambush him.  Officer Gil then saw one of the suspects point a gun at him.  Fearing for his safety, Officer Gil discharged his duty weapon several times and struck the vehicle.  The suspects then fled the scene.

At this time, it has not been determined if the suspects were struck by the gunfire.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
