Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 3400 Reeves

March 8, 2012 - The fatal shooting of a man at 3400 Reeves about noon on Wednesday (March 7) will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

Donald Sykes, 21, of Houston, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter, Richard James Jackson (b/m, DOB: 12-13-46), has been charged with felon in possession of a weapon in the 351st State District Court.  A photo of Jackson is attached to this news release.  He has not been charged in the fatal shooting of Mr. Sykes.

HPD Homicide Sergeant M. Jewell and Senior Police Officer R. Swainson reported:

The two men were neighbors who had an ongoing dispute over rent collection and a missing gun.  On Wednesday, the dispute escalated, leading to Jackson shooting Sykes.

Witnesses and Jackson reported to police that Sykes was the aggressor in this incident.  Jackson further told investigators he felt in fear of his life and believed Sykes was going to produce a pistol.
