Houston Police Department
Investigation into Incident at 2200 Bastrop

January 14, 2012 - Charges are pending against an armed suspect wounded by a Houston police officer in the 2200 block of Bastrop about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 12).

The suspect, Grandon Xavier Murray (b/m, DOB: 4-9-89), faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon.  Murray was wounded and transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.  A photo of Murray is not available at this time.

Officer S. Hope, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in this incident.  Officer Hope was sworn in as an officer in November 2009 and is assigned to the South Central Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant A. Semmelrock and Senior Police Officer C. Abbey reported:

An off-duty Houston police officer was approached by a suspect acting suspiciously.  When the officer identified himself, the suspect displayed a weapon.  The off-duty officer then asked for assistance from other on-duty officers nearby.  On-duty officers arrived at the above address and began to speak to the suspect.  The suspect immediately began to refuse verbal commands and then reached for his weapon in his waistband.  At that time, Officer Hope, in fear of his safety and for the safety of those around him, discharged his duty weapon.  Murray suffered non life-threatening wounds and was transported to the hospital.  Officers recovered a pistol from his pocket.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
