Fatal Traffic Accident at 400 Mercury

January 28, 2014 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 400 Mercury about 3:30 p.m. on Monday (Jan. 27).

The male victim, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant A. Vanderbull and Senior Police Officer J. Ortiz reported:

The victim was driving a gold Ford Taurus northbound in the 500 block of Mercury when, for an unknown reason, he crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a fence at Furr High School.  As school staff approached the driver, he drove away from the accident scene.  A Houston Independent School District (HISD) police officer pursued the driver on foot as he fled north on Mercury in the southbound lanes.

The vehicle then traveled north to Herman Brown Park, crashed through the fence of a residence at 10300 Broadstairs, struck several trees and then came to a stop.  HFD paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the driver deceased.
