Houston Police Department
Investigation into Incident at 6211 Collingsworth

May 1, 2014 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect at 6211 Collingsworth about 12:15 a.m. today (May 1).

The suspect, believed to be in his 20s, is in critical condition at Ben Taub General Hospital.  His identity is pending notification to family members and further investigation.

The officer who discharged his duty weapon, S. Scott, was not injured.  Officer Scott was sworn in as an officer in January 2009.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant M. McStravick and Senior Police Officer T. Andrade reported:

The suspect began knocking on the door and yelling for residents to come out of the home at the above address.  The suspect, who is a stranger to the residents, then picked up a metal pole and began breaking out windows on the house.  When patrol officers arrived, they ordered the suspect to put down the metal pole, but he refused to comply.  The officers deployed their Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs) multiple times against the suspect, with no effect on him.  When the suspect charged at officers using the metal pole in a spear-like manner, Officer Scott, fearing for his life and the lives of his fellow officers, discharged his duty weapon and struck the suspect more than one time.

Patrol officers immediately began applying first aid to the suspect's wounds until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived to treat the suspect and transport him to the hospital.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
