Houston Police Department
Armed Suspect Fatally Shot at 6406 Belarbor

May 6, 2014 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect at 6406 Belarbor about 1:20 p.m. on Monday (May 5).

The suspect was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Officer E. Tewes, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident.  Officer Tewes was sworn in as an officer in April 2007 and is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant H. Garcia and Officer C. Cardenas reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a call involving an armed male suspect in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt.  Officers saw the vehicle and followed it to the 6400 block of Belarbor, where they attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  The driver refused to stop and pulled into the driveway of a residence at 6406 Belarbor.  Officers gave the persons inside the vehicle verbal commands to stay inside.  The front seat passenger ignored the commands, exited the vehicle and ran to the back yard of the residence.

Officer Tewes pursued the suspect on foot and saw the suspect, with a gun in his right hand, attempt to jump over a wooden fence in the back yard.  The suspect then turned and pointed the gun toward Officer Tewes.  Fearing for his life, Officer Tewes discharged his duty weapon and struck the suspect.  The suspect was transported to the hospital where he died.  The suspect's weapon was recovered.  The other two males in the Cobalt were taken into custody at the scene.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
