Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 4400 North Freeway

September 3, 2014 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man at 4400 North Freeway (North Interstate Highway 45) service road about 2:15 a.m. today (September 3).

The male was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants B. Williams and M. A. Holbrook reported:

A security guard working at the shopping mall at the above address noticed a male sleeping behind a store at the location. The guard told the male to leave, but was ignored.  The guard then called police.  An HPD patrol officer responded to the scene and gave the male verbal commands to leave the area.  The male ignored the officer's commands, became belligerent, attacked the officer, and punched the officer in the face.  As the officer called for backup, the male turned toward the security guard and attempted to strike him.  Fearing for his life, the security guard fired his weapon and struck the suspect. Paramedics transported the suspect to the hospital.

The investigation is continuing.
