Houston Police Department
Fatal Traffic Accident at 1900 North Freeway

February 2, 2015 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident at 1900 North Freeway (North Interstate Highway 45) about 2:45 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 31).

The identity of the male victim, 39, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Roberts and Officer C. Jarboe reported:

The victim was initially involved in a two vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of the North Freeway, in which he lost control for an unknown reason and struck a second vehicle. The victim stepped out of his vehicle and was standing on the main lanes of the freeway while the driver of the second vehicle remained in his car and called 911. While the second driver was on the phone with dispatch, the driver of a white Toyota Prius slammed on his brakes to avoid the two vehicles on the freeway. As a result of the Toyota's sudden braking, the driver of a white BMW struck the rear of the Toyota. After striking the Toyota, the driver of the BMW then lost control and struck the victim of the original crash, who was still standing on the main lanes of the freeway. The victim was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the BMW did not show signs of intoxication at the scene and was released without charges.

The investigation is continuing.
