UPDATE: Escaped Prisoner Arrested


July 27, 2015 - A suspect wanted for fleeing from Houston police custody has been arrested.

The suspect, Jorge Mendez (H/m, 17), is charged with engaging in organized crime and felony escape in the 183rd State District Court. 

About 2:15 a.m. on Sunday (July 26), Mendez was transported from the HPD Central Jail to the Harris County Jail at 1201 Franklin.  Upon arrival, he and other prisoners were removed from the transport bus in preparation for being booked into the Harris County Jail.  At some point during this process, Mendez managed to free himself from his restraints and flee on foot.
Mendez is described only as an Hispanic male, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 245 pounds with short brown hair.  A photo of Mendez is attached to this news release.

Further investigation led police to a southeast Houston apartment where, about 11:40 a.m. today (July 27), he was arrested without incident by members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
