July 23, 2015 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed suspect at 6200 Gulfton about 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday (July 22).

The suspect, Helder Flores (H/m, 23), was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he remains in stable condition.  Charges are expected to be filed against him soon.

The officer who discharged his duty weapon, Senior Police Officer T. Harris, was not injured.  Officer Harris, assigned to the Westside Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in May 1995.

HPD Homicide Division Officers M. Arrington and M. Dykens reported:

Two HPD officers were working an approved extra job at the La Estancia apartment complex at the above address when they observed the suspect and two other males acting suspiciously.  When the officers confronted the males, the suspect pointed a gun at the officers.  At that time, one officer discharged his duty weapon more than one time and struck the suspect.  Paramedics transported the suspect to the hospital. One of the other males was detained and questioned.  The other male fled on foot.

As is customary when an HPD officer discharges a weapon causing an injury, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
