HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant R. Dukes and Officer B. Mark reported:

The driver (suspect) of a white Mazda MX-9 was traveling northbound on the South Freeway and weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed.  Traffic on the freeway then slowed due to a traffic accident.  The suspect was unable to stop and struck the rear of a black Acura TI.  The impact caused the Acura to then strike a red Volkswagen Jetta.  The Mazda also struck a black Honda Accord after the initial accident.  Ms. Vu, a rear passenger in the Acura, was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Acura was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.  The front passenger of the Acura and the driver of the Jetta were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital.  All were transported for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.  The driver of the Accord was uninjured.  The suspect then fled on foot.

On March 19, Polanco turned himself in to investigators at the HPD Hit and Run Unit.  He admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the accident and fleeing the scene without providing medical assistance.  He was then taken into custody and subsequently charged.
