Investigation into Incident at 7884 Tidwell

October 16, 2015 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which HPD officers discharged their weapons at two armed male suspects at 7884 Tidwell about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 15).

One suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.  The second suspect was wounded and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.  A third male suspect was arrested nearby, uninjured.  The identity of the deceased male is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.  The identities of the two other suspects are pending verification at this time.

The three officers who discharged their weapons were not injured in this incident.  Sergeant H. Torres was sworn in as an officer in March 1988, Officer J. Sanders in September 2007 and Officer T. Curtner in March 2007.  All three are assigned to the North Patrol Division Tactical Team.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant J. Robles and Officer E. Wohlgemuth reported:

Officers with the North Division Tactical team observed the three suspects enter the Cash Express store at the above address.  The officers witnessed the suspects jump over the front counter inside the store and rob the location. Officers waited outside the store for the suspects to exit and as they exited, two of the suspects were seen holding handguns.

Officers then gave the suspects verbal commands, at which time one suspect ran toward Tidwell Road and the other two suspects, armed with handguns, ran toward the officers. Officers again told the suspects to stop, but the suspects continued to run toward the officers. The officers, in fear of their safety and their partners' safety, discharged their weapons.  Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds.  The third suspect, who ran toward Tidwell, was located at a nearby business and taken into custody without further incident.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents involving an injury in the city limits, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
