Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 10300 North Freeway

December 12, 2016 - Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 10300 North Freeway about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday (Dec. 10).

The suspect, Refugio Eguia-Garcia (H/m, 44), is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the 230th State District Court.  A photo of Eguia-Garcia is attached to this news release.

The identity of the male victim, 20, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Roque and Officer D. Robinson reported:

Four vehicles were involved in the crash.  Eguia-Garcia was driving a red GMC Sonoma on the North Freeway at a very slow rate of speed or stopped in a moving lane of traffic when his vehicle was struck from behind by a gray Nissan Pathfinder driven by the victim.  When the victim exited his vehicle and was standing alongside of it, he was struck by a black Honda Civic.  A Honda Accord then struck the rear of the Civic.  The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics found Eguia-Garcia passed out behind the wheel in his vehicle and eventually got him to respond.  It was determined he showed signs of being intoxicated.  Eguia-Garcia was taken into custody and subsequently charged.  The drivers of the two Honda vehicles did not show signs of intoxication.  A female passenger, 38, of the Honda Civic, was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing.
