Investigation into Incident at 13800 Gulf Freeway

July 28, 2016 - Houston police are investigating an incident in which a suspect died following a police pursuit that ended at 13800 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) at about 12: 35 a.m.

The suspect, Gary Leonard Blalock, Jr., 38, who crashed his vehicle and also suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound was pronounced dead at the scene.  His cause of death is pending autopsy results from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Officers M. Arroyo, E. Aguilera and J. Dodson reported:

HPD Traffic Enforcement officers observed a vehicle whose driver had committed several traffic infractions consistent with an intoxicated driver and initiated a traffic stop in the 17000 block of the Gulf Freeway service road inbound. The officers approached the driver (Blalock), and after making contact with him for several minutes, the officer on the passenger side observed Blalock was sitting on a gun and yelled a warning to his partner. Blalock then sped off. The officers attempted to pursue the vehicle and were able to locate it at 13800 Gulf Freeway service road entrance ramp. When the officers approached the vehicle, they discovered Blalock had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The vehicle had struck the guard rail and had body damage to the front end.

As is customary in deaths that occur during police action, this in-custody death is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Division.
