Investigation into Shooting of Male at 1504 Ben Taub Loop

October 11, 2016 - Houston police are investigating the shooting of an armed male suspect by a Harris County Sheriff's Office deputy at 1504 Ben Taub Loop about 10:30 a.m. last Thursday (Oct. 6).

The wounded suspect, Ricky Lynn Hall (w/m, 46), was in critical condition at Ben Taub General Hospital.

The sheriff's deputy who discharged his duty weapon was not injured.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officers S. Spivey and W. Huff reported:

A sheriff's deputy was working overtime at Ben Taub General Hospital at the above address and sitting on a prisoner (Hall), waiting for hospital personnel to transport him to another area of the hospital.  The prisoner got out of his hospital bed and managed to grab a female medical student, 24, and put her in a choke hold.  The prisoner placed a sharp object to the woman's neck and threatened to kill her.  The deputy drew his duty weapon and ordered the prisoner to put the sharp object down and release the woman.  The prisoner refused and instead pressed the object into the woman's neck, threatening to kill her.  The deputy then discharged his weapon and struck the prisoner.

As is customary when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon in the city limits causing injury, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
