Investigation into Fatal Shooting at 6300 South Sam Houston Parkway


February 25, 2017 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a juvenile female at 6300 South Sam Houston Parkway about 2 a.m. today.

The victim, DeMaree Atkins, 8 years of age, was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives D. Stark and G. Sullivan reported:

Patrol officers responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of the South Sam Houston Parkway feeder road (Beltway 8) and Fuqua Street.  When officers arrived, they learned that two to three vehicles were traveling at high rates of speed southbound on Fuqua.  One of the vehicles, a Pontiac, was struck in the intersection by a black Honda Accord traveling eastbound on the service road.  At some point after the crash, an unknown person opened fire on the Honda, striking DeMaree, who was in the vehicle with her mother.  Paramedics transported the girl to the hospital where she died of her injuries.  Her mother was not injured.  

A vehicle that fled the scene is described only as a dark, four-door sedan.

There are no suspects in custody and no known motive for the shooting at this time. 

Investigators urge anyone with information in this case to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.  A Crime Stoppers reward of up to $5,000 is available to anyone who provides information (to Crime Stoppers) leading to the arrest and charges against the suspect(s).
