HPD, Victim's Family Seek Help in 2016 Fatal Hit and Run Crash


May 5, 2017 - HOUSTON - At a news briefing at 10:30 a.m. TODAY (May 4), investigators in the Houston Police Department's Hit and Run Unit will discuss the case of a female fatally struck by a vehicle at 5800 Chimney Rock at about 6:25 a.m. on May 15, 2016. 

Investigators will be joined by family members of the victim, Diana Grace Vargas, 19.  The news briefing will be held in the first floor media briefing room of the HPD Edward A. Thomas Building at 1200 Travis.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Ross and Officer E. Rubio reported:

Ms. Vargas was walking eastbound and crossing Chimney Rock, not at a designated  crosswalk, when she was struck by a white Nissan Sentra traveling southbound on Chimney Rock.  The driver of the Nissan did not stop and fled the scene.  Vargas was then transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was later found abandoned at 6700 Dashwood after it struck an apartment wall.  The owner of the vehicle was questioned at the scene and released.
