Suspect Arrested, Charged in Incident at 12900 Fuqua

December 26, 2018 - Houston police have arrested a suspect charged in the assault of a HPD officer that occurred at 12900 West Fuqua about 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 25).

Jose Luis Corona (H/m, 39), is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 180th State District Court.  A photo of Corona is not available at this time.

Officer I. Almasri, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in this incident.  Almasri, who is assigned to the Southwest Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in January 2016.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Senior Police Officer G. Garcia and Officers M. Seay, R. Lujan and A. August reported:

Officer Almasri responded to a report of a traffic hazard at the intersection of West Fuqua and Almeda Road.  Upon arrival, Officer Almasri was flagged down by citizens who began pointing towards a Hispanic male suspect (Corona).  The citizens advised Corona was armed with a knife and was sitting in a car that did not belong to him.  As Officer Almasri approached, he observed Corona exit the vehicle and begin charging at him.  Officer Almasri then ordered Corona to drop what he believed to be a knife.  Officer Almasri, in fear of his safety, then discharged his duty weapon but did not strike Corona.  Officer Almasri attempted to fire again but was unable to do so due to a weapon malfunction. Corona then attempted to flee on foot across several moving lanes of traffic.  Officer Almasri chased Corona and observed him attempting to open the doors of passing vehicles.  Officer Almasri discharged his conducted energy device (CED) twice at Corona, both times having no effect.  Corona was then taken into custody with the assistance of two Precinct 7 deputy constables.

Corona was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital and was treated for minor injuries.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by HPD's Special Investigations Unit and the Internal Affairs Division.
