Investigation into Fatal Shooting Incident at 7100 Beechnut

November 15, 2018 - Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by an HPD officer about 5:25 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 14).

The identity of the male suspect is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Officer A. Kelley, who discharged her duty weapon, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.  Officer Kelley, assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division, was sworn in as an officer in August 2016.

HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Senior Police Officer G. Garcia and Officers M. Seay, R. Lujan and A. August reported:

Officer Kelley was dispatched to a traffic hazard call at the above address. Upon arrival, she observed an unknown white male (suspect) walking around in the street and striking passing cars with a flag pole.  The officer exited her vehicle and approached the suspect, who attacked the officer and knocked her to the ground.  The suspect wrapped his arm around the officer’s neck and began choking her.  Officer Kelley regained her stance and deployed her CED (conducted energy device) on the suspect, with negative results. The suspect continued to charge at the officer and ignore her verbal commands to stop.  After attempting to create distance, Officer Kelley feared for her life and discharged her duty weapon once at the suspect, striking him in the chest.  Paramedics transported the suspect to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division, as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
