HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives D. Hobson, J. Snook, R. Gonzalez, E Contreras and R. Bass reported:

Three Harris County Sheriff's deputies were patrolling the area near the above address and saw a silver Pontiac Bonneville in the parking lot of an apartment complex that matched the description of a vehicle used a recent robbery,  Deputies approached, saw two persons inside the vehicle and immediately gave them verbal commands to exit the vehicle with their hands visible.

The front seat passenger (Spell-Taylor) attempted to open the vehicle door with his left hand and, at the same time, put his right hand in his pocket.  The deputies gave Spell-Taylor verbal commands to show his hands, which he ignored, and instead, pulled a gun from his pocket.  Fearing for his and his fellow deputies' safety, the deputy discharged his duty weapon and struck Spell-Taylor.  Paramedics responded to the scene and transported him to the hospital.  No other injuries were reported.

As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
