Investigation into Fatal Crash at 5700 Eastex Freeway

October 8, 2021 - Houston police have learned a male critically injured in a crash at 5700 Eastex Freeway (North U.S. Highway 59) that occurred about 10:50 p.m. on October 5 has died.

The identity of the male victim, 28, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant J. Uribe and Officer T. Smith reported:

The victim was driving a red BMW on the North Loop exit ramp to the Eastex Freeway when it failed to maintain a single lane and struck the concrete barrier.  The vehicle then drove off the exit ramp and landed in the 5700 block of the Eastex Freeway service road.  The passenger was able to exit the vehicle and attempted to get help from a Metro Police officer.  The Metro officer and passenger were unable to get the victim out of the vehicle before the vehicle caught on fire. 

Houston Fire Department emergency personnel arrived and extinguished the fire.  Paramedics were able to remove the victim and both he and his passenger were transported to Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center in critical condition. 

On Thursday (October 7), doctors pronounced the victim deceased.

The investigation is ongoing.
