Special Operations - Special Events Unit

The Special Events unit consists of one lieutenant, two sergeants, and one officer. The unit is responsible for staffing all special events inside Houston. This unit schedules any number from a few officers to a few hundred officers per event. Staffing can be a logistical nightmare, but this full time unit keeps the city moving. This unit coordinates parades, fun runs, festivals, and civic celebrations. The unit reviews all city permits for functions that involve a city street. They are ultimately in charge of deciding times, routes, and roads to be closed. When you attend a major function such as the Power over Houston or the super Bowl festivities, the entire plan and staffing of the event is the work of this small, but efficient unit.
