VOLUNTEER INITIATIVES PROGRAM - VOLUNTEER CHAPLAINS

The Volunteer Chaplains are coordinated and managed by the Houston Police Department’s Chaplain, Monty B. Montgomery. Volunteer Chaplains assist Chaplain Montgomery in his many duties and responsibilities.

Chaplain Responsibilities

  • Bring comfort, consolation and assistance to police officers, other members of the department, and the families of department personnel who are involved in crisis, accidents, and natural catastrophes.
  • Assist the department in death notifications.
  • Serve as a liaison between the ministry community and the department.
  • Visit sick or injured officers and department personnel in homes and hospitals.
  • Offer counsel and spiritual guidance, when desired, for personnel involved in affairs such as: family tensions, attempted suicide, desertion, runaways, lost persons, and drug/alcohol cases.
  • Provide invocations and benedictions at department ceremonies and special events.
  • Represent the department in community religious services.

Law Enforcement Chaplain

  • A law enforcement chaplain is a clergy person with special interest and training for providing pastoral care in the world of law enforcement.
  • This pastoral care is offered to all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, creed, or religion.
  • It is offered without cost or the taint of proselytizing.
  • The law enforcement chaplain is led in his or her own faith to be available and ready to serve those in need.
  • The chaplain’s ministry provides a source of strength to the law enforcement officers and their families, other department members, and the community.
  • Chaplains listen and participate in the workplace of law enforcement officers with empathy and experience, advising calmly in the midst of turmoil and danger, and offering assistance when appropriate or requested.

Volunteer Chaplains

  • Volunteer Chaplains provide religious guidance, counseling, community involvement, and assistance from skilled practicing ministers, who volunteer their expertise to the department.
