Root Memorial Square, located across La Branch Street from Toyota Center, was donated to the City of Houston in 1923 by descendants of Alexander Porter Root and his wife, Laura Shepherd Root, for the purpose of perpetuating their memory.

A design plan was developed by the Convention & Entertainment Facilities Department for the purpose of renovating the property, including new sidewalks, civic art, new irrigation, a basketball court, a shade pavilion, a fountain and improved lighting. On October 13, 2004, City Council awarded a construction contract for $1,880,000. Work was completed in 2005.

The Clutch City Foundation (affiliated with the Houston Rockets) offered to participate in the refurbishment of Root Memorial Square and held two "Tux and Tennies" fundraisers to pay for the basketball court. A proposal to name the court for former Mayor Bob Lanier was approved by City Council on October 13, 2004.

With the completion of the expanded George R. Brown Convention Center, Toyota Center and the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel, the improved Root Memorial Square will serve as an important new focus for outdoor events in downtown Houston.
