A new partnership will help employees further their education at discount rates.
The city’s recent partnership with American University System offers employees up to 60 percent off tuition for online classes and courses at specific universities. Employees and family members can earn associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degrees in education, business or health care.
The program also offers classes in English, fine arts, math, science and social studies.
“As we move into the future, technology is constantly changing,” said Brent Powell, Human Resources assistant director. “The better educated and knowledgeable we are, the better we can adapt at work and take care of our families.”
City employees can already get specific technical training at E.B. Cape. Now, they and their parents, spouse or children can chose from six associate’s, 16 bachelor’s, and 25 master’s degree courses through AUS.
The partnership doesn’t cost the city money, but it gives employees and their families the choice of many subjects at great prices, Powell said. For instance, an MBA from New England College of Business costs $16,900 and takes 18 months to complete. Each of the 18 master’s programs in the education field costs less than $7,000 for an 18-month program.
Because all classes are online, students can attend a New England school from the comfort of their homes in Houston. (See box.)
AUS is a nationwide nonprofit association of colleges and universities focused on increasing access to higher education. The association allows schools to reach more students for their online courses, which cost less to hold than traditional classrooms courses, Powell said.
