GARBAGE AND YARD TRIMMINGS PICKUP DAYS CHANGE IN SE: INCREASED SAVINGS AND EFFICIENCY EXPECTED

On July 14, 2008, the City of Houston will be changing garbage days in some Southeast Houston neighborhoods. These neighborhoods are Garden Villas, Gulf Freeway Oaks, Gulf Meadows, Hobby Allen Farms, Meadowbrook Freeway, as well as Clear Lake’s Meadow Green, Oak Brook and Oak Brook West. Earlier this year, several thousand homes that were previously under private garbage collection service switched to City of Houston solid waste service. To accommodate these new customers in a short time frame, the department quickly placed these homes into the daily workload without disruption to the surrounding area. However, to best service the entire southeast area most efficiently, the neighborhoods will be re-routed to optimize efficiency and reduce cost.

In order to take maximum advantage of the route optimization, some customers will experience a service day change for automated garbage and yard trimmings collection beginning July 14th.

The department will utilize a variety of communication methods such as direct mail, radio, phone bank, and attending community meetings to spread the word,” said Harry Hayes, Solid Waste Management Department. Hayes also added, “For a smoother transition, we waited until after the Independence holiday week to implement these garbage day changes.”

District I Council Member James Rodriguez said, “I commend Mr. Hayes and his team for their hard work and commitment to a larger service area. Change can create a challenge without a cohesive transition, but I am confident that our Solid Waste Management Department will take the necessary steps to inform the community about its new service schedule.”

District E Council Member Mike Sullivan said, “I am impressed with the level and quality of service the Solid Waste Management Department has delivered to the community. I look forward to moving to the next phase, which will provide more consistent service and potentially reduce costs, thereby saving taxpayers money.”

Residents who will experience a service day change will receive a letter this week notifying them of the change.
