On March 12, 2009, the Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) initiated a one-year automated recycling pilot program in eight neighborhoods to increase recycling and help divert waste from landfills.  The eight neighborhoods participating in the pilot program are Lindale Park, Meyerland, Oakbrook, Old Sixth Ward, Pineloch, Pinebrook, Riverwood Estates and Westbury.  By March 20th, all eight neighborhoods had their first cart collection.  As SWMD Director Harry Hayes pledged, data collection began immediately to determine neighborhood participation rates.

The results are in and who do you think had the most carts out for collection?  If you guessed Meyerland—you’re right! This is no surprise since Meyerland has historically been a recycling champion.  But Meyerland’s reign at the top may be brief should they falter.  Pinebrook is breathing down Meyerland’s neck and could easily walk away with bragging rights.  Westbury, Pineloch, Oakbrook and Old Sixth Ward are also in great form and should give both Meyerland and Pinebrook some solid competition.  Standards have been set high but Lindale Park and Riverwood Estates can stir up some excitement if they come in from behind to beat the other participants.

This first round kicked off in high gear and has been exciting.  The anticipation is building as to which neighborhood’s performance will be over the top next time.  This is too close a race to call---even Reusette Wisely won’t speculate on which neighborhood has the best chance to win the next Battle of the Green Carts.
