September 19, 2006 - Although the department directly serves about 300,000 households, an additional 85,000 homes receive garbage service from the private sector company, Republic Waste through a contract with the City of Houston.
Yesterday Republic Waste was in negotiations with their laborers (NOT THE CITY OF HOUSTON). As a result, Monday's Garbage, Yard Trimmings and Heavy Trash in the Republic Waste contract area were not collected.
The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department received a phone call at 8:00 a.m. this morning from Republic Waste's Area President Bill Linthicum informing us that Republic Waste and its labor force had come to an agreement and they will continue with their services in the City's area.
Schedule:
- Republic Waste will collect Tuesday's garbage and yard trimmings today. They will begin Monday's route if they have time.
- Monday's garbage and yard trimmings will be collected by Wednesday.
- Republic Waste will collect 3rd Monday's heavy trash routes today and will continue into 3rd Tuesdays routes as time permits today.
The Solid Waste Management Department provides solid waste service to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal and recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective.
