October 20, 2008 -- Due to the after effects of Hurricane Ike, the City of Houston temporarily suspended its curbside recycling collection. There are many municipal recycling drop-off sites within the city limits. Please refer to the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department’s website www.houstontx.gov/solidwaste/recycling.html for recycling site locations. Many of the Houston area H-E-B stores offer recycling options. They have recycling receptacles in their parking areas that accept: steel cans, aluminum cans, plastic and paper. Please log on to www.heb.com or www.greenhoustontx.gov/pdf/heb-map.pdf to find the store nearest you that has these recycling bins. Money raised by the bins at H-E-B is donated to Keep Houston Beautiful. An additional alternative is the Paper Retriever program which offers paper recycling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To find your nearest paper recycling bin, log onto www.paperretriever.com and click the bin on the right side of the home page (“Find a Recycling Bin”). Enter your address, click search and a map will appear that displays all the paper recycling bins in your neighborhood. Paper Retriever paper-only bins accept magazines, catalogs, mail, newspaper, office paper and school papers. Each organization that hosts the green and yellow bins is paid for the paper collected.
