City officials, along with representatives from Reliant, an NRG company, and Living Earth, watched as the official city holiday tree was cut into small pieces and mulched for the 24th year in a row. The purpose of the event is to encourage residents to recycle their holiday trees, saving landfill space and disposal costs.

“A fresh tree is a holiday tradition in thousands of homes across the area, and the city of Houston makes it easy for us to do the right thing by recycling them at the end of the season,” said Elizabeth Killinger, president of NRG Retail and Reliant. “Making the best use of the resources we have is one of the ways that we can make our communities more sustainable, and NRG and Reliant are proud to support the city in this endeavor.”

Residents can recycle their trees by dropping them off at one of eighteen (18) free, drop-off, recycling sites located throughout Houston. The program runs from December 27, 2014 to January 8, 2015. All facilities are closed New Year’s Day, January 1, 2015. In addition to the drop-off locations, residents with City of Houston collection may place their tree curbside on their scheduled Tree Waste day and it will be recycled. Trees that are collected for recycling will be ground into mulch that is available in bulk directly from Living Earth or available in bags as Living Earth Houston Mulch sold at Houston area retailers.

The trees must have all decorations, ornaments, tinsel, lights and stands removed. Flocked trees cannot be recycled. Trees may be dropped off at the following eighteen (18) locations city-wide.
